THANK YOU NOTES FACTS

  • Thank you notes are more important than the guest list. Your biggest responsibility after getting any gift is to send a thank you note as soon as possible.
  • All gifts should be acknowledged with a handwritten thank you note within two weeks. This includes gifts from: weddings, showers, anniversaries, birthdays, graduation, and condolence wishes.
  • Wedding gifts should be acknowledged within four to five weeks, three months at the very latest, from the wedding date with a handwritten thank you note.
  • Verbal thanks, pre-printed cards, emails and postcards from the honeymoon are all considered inappropriate means of expressing your thanks.
  • If the same person gets you a gift for multiple events - say, a shower gift and a wedding gift - you must send a separate note for each gift.
  • If you receive a “group gift” from less than 10 people, you should send a thank you card to each of them. However if the group is much larger, such as an office or club contribution, post a thank you card in a visible location, and remember to thank the contributors individually when you get the chance.
  • A typical wedding, according to the Fairchild Bridal Group averages 168 guests.
  • Be sure to send thank you notes to friends and relatives who arrange showers and parties for you. It is appropriate to thank them for the party or shower in the same card you send thanking them for their gift.
  • Everyone involved in a wedding from the flower girl to the best man should receive a note. Try to remember to thank all those involved. Thank you notes are much appreciated by professionals and form a reference base for use during their presentation or sales pitch. Wasn’t it reassuring to see a binder stuffed with thank you notes when interviewing your photographer, caterer or florist?
  • • It’s even a nice idea to send a thank you to your parents, even though it’s not a must. It’s always nice to receive a note of appreciation.

Relatives and friends take the time to select a personalized gift. They expect to receive thank you notes and remember when they don’t.
